Yoga at Home: Benefits of Yin Yoga

Even during confinement, our lives can still feel hectic and busy. If there are no places to go or people to see, there are still text messages to reply to, emails to reply to, and constant messages and tips coming to us. Our cities may close, but our monkey minds keep jumping from thought to thought.

Even in the best of times, our modern lifestyles are very Yang! We lack daily practices that slow us down and help us find peace. Yin as a style of yoga can provide us with an antidote, helping us to regain the balance of our body and our mental / emotional states.

Vinyasa yoga focuses on strengthening the muscles and getting the blood to move vigorously through the body. In comparison, the target tissue in Yin is our dense connective tissue: fascia, ligaments, tendons, and joints. Yin is soft, slow and seeks to find depth through softness. When we apply stress to the fascial tissues in a gentle and sustained manner, this keeps them healthy and hydrated! In most yin postures we aim to completely relax our muscles so that our deeper fascial tissue can receive the benefits.

It is important to know that yin is about relaxing the body and mind, no Passive stretching (which can be harmful if done in excess!) Will yin increase your range of motion and flexibility? It may, but that’s not the point and shouldn’t be the goal when we get into positions.

Yin is unique because it teaches us to find stillness; it helps us to perfect our ability to stay in this moment, for longer. We will regulate our breathing, surrender to the longer intakes (usually 2-5 minutes) and just stay. We literally slow everything down, including our brain waves! It is in this way that yin offers us positions as a point of access to meditation.

While meditation is by far the easiest of all practices, it can also be the most difficult! How often do we feel really still? Many of us can’t even stand still waiting for the bus. We open our phones thoughtfully and begin to distract our minds with more stimuli.

Yin can be the bridge between our physical practice (asana) and meditation (dhyana), as it gives us a feeling to stay focused. It gently draws us to longer periods of deep concentration (dharana), which is a step towards meditation.

Incredibly accessible and easy to make, the benefits of yin are immediate; You will leave the classroom feeling calm, balanced, fluid and calm. Especially right now when we are practicing yoga at home, yin is a wonderful place to start your yoga journey or complement your Vinyasa practice.
