Where Yoga Came From

The history of yoga begins with the Vedas, ancient texts written in Sanskrit. These poems and songs explore yoga as a spiritual practice. The Vedas refer to yoga techniques used in Vedic rituals. The Upanishads, a collection of philosophical texts, contain the earliest written reference to “yoga.” Upanishads describe a form of yoga where a person learns to restrain one’s senses in order to achieve enlightenment. The Upanishads, however, do not mention a physical practice.

There is some controversy over the exact date that yoga began. Some researchers believe that the practice began over 5,000 years ago in the Indus-Sarasvati civilization. Ancient texts of the time include the Rig-Veda, which contains the earliest known writings on yoga. These texts, which were used by Brahmans and Vedic priests, describe yoga practices. Later on, yoga was developed by Rishis, or masters of the art. These masters recorded their techniques in a collection of over two hundred scriptures, known as upanishads. The Bhagavad-Gita was written around 500 B.C.E.

After the birth of the first modern yogi, the practice of yoga continued to grow and spread. Swami Vivekananda, a monk from Calcutta, was considered the man who brought yoga to the West. His 1894 address at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago helped bring yoga into the Western world. The monks’ writings and lectures about yoga soon spread throughout Europe and America. Today, yoga is practiced by millions of people worldwide.

In addition to the physical practice of yoga, it is a spiritual practice that connects the body and the mind. Many different cultures have embraced this practice, and many cities and small towns have their own yoga studios. Yoga can benefit the body and mind, and can even cure medical conditions. While the practice began in ancient India, it became popular in the west in the 1980s. Thousands of yoga studios are located throughout the world.

Vivekananda taught yoga to many Americans through his travels and translated Yogic texts into English. With these advancements, yoga quickly became popular and is practiced worldwide. The earliest written record of yoga is believed to date back to the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India. Its roots are in the Rig Veda, the oldest sacred text in the Indian language. Upanishads and Vedas also mention yoga. Some researchers even go as far as to say that yoga was born in the Middle Ages, despite the fact that yoga is not exclusively Hindu. Its religious roots make it even more complex to determine where it originated.
