Although the exact start of meditation is unknown, it is likely to be as old as humanity. In fact, there are multiple religions and cultures that have references to meditative practices, and it is believed that the ancient practices may have influenced the modern practice of meditation.
While there is little known about the history of meditation, it dates back to as early as 5,000 BCE in China. Earlier, it was practiced by people in the Hindu and Buddhist religions. In the eighteenth century, it was a topic of discussion among intellectuals and philosophers. It was only in the twentieth century that it gained prominence. In fact, it was Swami Vivekananda’s presentation of Eastern spirituality at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago that sparked a sweeping interest in the practice. Other notable examples of meditation include the Bhagavad Gita, a Sanskrit scripture, which is part of the Mahabharata and contains 700 verses.
The history of meditation is fascinating. The practices began in ancient Egypt, and by the end of the eighth century, it had become widespread throughout the East. Dosho, a Japanese monk, inaugurated the first Japanese meditation room. The year 1227 saw the establishment of Zen Buddhism, which was founded by a Japanese Buddhist monk.
