If you don’t breathe, you’re not doing yoga. This is one of the many mottos of Buddhi Yoga teacher training. There are several principles of breathing that are very important for all yoga teachers. You will learn and teach each other many different breathing techniques, or pranayama, over the course of three months. Our yoga training in San Diego covers breathing from three key perspectives: anatomical, physiological, and energetic. You will also learn a movement system that is based on the rhythm and flow of breathing. Yoga is a body-mind practice. Breathing is a great and accessible way for you and your prospective students to experience the body-mind connection.

The anatomy of breathing

DiaphragmThe main muscle of the breath is the diaphragm. This will be one of the main muscles we will study. You will also know the accessory muscles of inspiration. When you start teaching, you will find (and you may see it in yourself as well) that many people use the accessory muscles to breathe. This creates tension and discomfort in the neck and shoulders, as well as a weak and underused diaphragm. Teaching people to breathe properly is an invaluable gift that you can share with students in a variety of settings.

The physiology of respiration

The way we breathe has a strong impact on the physiology of the body. One of the ways this impact is evident is in the autonomic nervous system. Don’t worry if you have no idea what this is! This training will give you a basic breakdown of SNA and its two main components, the Sympathetic Nervous System and the Parasympathetic Nervous System. Deep, slow breathing initiates the body’s relaxation response. Even if your body is doing something that is very difficult physically, if your breathing is deep and steady, you are in a state of healing. As yoga teachers, we do not diagnose, heal, or heal. We are owners of spaces and dynamizers. When you teach students to breathe and guide them through different types of breathing or pranayama, you are facilitating a state of healing. You teach breathing and you are teaching yoga.

The energetics of breathing

PranaThe yogic system believes that the universe and everything inside is animated by PRANA. Most Eastern medical philosophies and systems recognize the existence of a force or energy that gives us life. From a yogic perspective, Prana flows throughout the universe. In the human system it flows through us through the breath. Prana is a fundamental principle for all yoga energy anatomy. As we learn about chakras and nadis, you will see how maximizing the flow of breath or Prana through the system is the only way for our energy systems to thrive.

Principles of breathing movement

Buddhi Yoga Training is a program based on vinyasa. As you will learn, vinyasa is about the connection between breathing and movement. When it comes to sequencing and how you move between positions and while in a posture, it all depends on inhalation and exhalation. For example, in a greeting in the sun, we reach up in arms as we breathe in and bend forward on exhalation. From an energetic, anatomical, and physiological perspective, this combination of breathing and movement makes sense. Understanding what part of the breath goes along with what movements is a central theme of this workout. This will transform your own practice and give you a solid and practical foundation to teach.
