Before we move on to the benefits of meditation, we need to understand the basics of the practice. If you’re a complete beginner, you can try a body scan technique. This technique cultivates a gentle curiosity about your body. It works much like a photocopier, scanning the physical sensations that arise. You’re not trying to understand or change these feelings. Instead, you are simply noticing them. This technique is an excellent way to begin practicing meditation.

In the first few weeks, meditation may feel uncomfortable. You may notice weird sensations, get bored, or daydream. However, remember that you’re not in control of these feelings. By practice, you will begin to notice your thoughts come and go. In time, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try meditation earlier. And remember, it takes time and repetition to develop a practice that you’ll want to practice daily.

Meditation is best practiced outdoors, but it’s possible to meditate indoors, too. Just don’t lie down on a couch. You can use an upright chair instead. It’s more comfortable for beginners, and you’ll maintain your posture much easier. If you’re having difficulty sitting still, you can rest your hands on your knees or on your lap. As long as you’re able to keep an upright position, you’re good to go.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-follow guide to meditation, there’s a lot of information available online. The Awakening Valley Sangha (the nonprofit organization that provides support for newcomers) has numerous meditation videos. If you’re looking for an audio guide, there’s a TEDx talk by Mark Gomez and the author of Meditation 101 A Guide For Beginners.

Although the practice doesn’t guarantee everlasting happiness, it will change how you look at life and how you view it. It will give you a little pocket of calm in the middle of the outer chaos. To be successful, you need to be open and willing to explore. This way, you’ll get a better understanding of the inner workings of your mind. You can meditate at any time of the day or night, as long as you are consistent.

During a meditation session, you can choose to focus your attention on a single point. This can be a candle flame or a mantra. You may choose whichever technique works best for you. You can also focus on different parts of your body like your toes or feet, legs, pelvis, upper or lower back, to name a few. While it’s important to focus on one area of your body at a time, you can always return to your original focus.

A strong emotional state can prevent you from fully focusing on meditation. Your emotions will make your mind wander and create stories. Your feelings will distract you from the real meaning of meditation. To counteract this, focus on your breath to release heat. Concentrate on your breathing to become aware of your body. Start with a short meditation to avoid strong emotions. This way, you can see what the practice is all about. This way, you can learn the benefits of meditation and practice it without the need to spend hours at a time.
