How to get the yogic mind

The mind is an internal instrument of actions. It is the basis of all the normal conscious physical and psychological functions of a being.

In yoga the mind is traditionally called how “internal instrument”. It has mainly four interconnected functions:

  • My – Including the five motor physical senses
  • Buddhi– Intellectual or computer power of the mind
  • Ahamkara-Personalization of the experience
  • Shut up – experience store

My, through the five sensory motors: hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, tasting; in contact with the outside world it provides sensory impressions. It does not evaluate incoming information and continues to collect anything in contact. It works under the influence of the conditioning of habits, impulses and instincts. Strong conditioning avoids evaluation, so judgment and discrimination are beyond mana capacity. It can be compared as Mind receptionist. Without the help of stronger faculties like Buddhi, this mana receptionist is likely to condition himself and live a dubious, impulse-driven, undecided life. If Manas is not able to provide sensory data to the mind, the other faculty which is much more complicated, Chitta is activated to supply data from the mind store.

Shut up, is the fundamental mind of three other functions of the mind. It is the storehouse of all the impressions collected so far. Self-awareness, computing power, sensory inputs, etc. they arise from Chitta, as mental material. It has several layers upon layers from the surface to the deep memories. It is always in dynamic mode. It actively responds to external sensory stimuli and when the body is calm, it continues to passively awaken memories of the past. When sitting in a quiet room with your eyes closed, function Shut up it is very clear. Initially, the trains of thought will be fast and of immediate concern, but with continued non-cooperation, thoughts will become clouds of old / unknown images. This is going from conscious to unconscious. Chitta can be compared to warehouse of the mind.

Each experience introduces the being with a sensation and each sensation reinforces the mind with the sense of self. Because of this seal of the self-hooded mind that has a separate identity. Thus the mind offers the ability to say, “this is mine.” This statement of the self is called how Ahamkara or “I”. Self-formation is a total game changer, as ideas and objects are now tied to property. This Ahamkara provides solidity to the mental image, signature and strength to the people of the people. It gives a name and a shape to the mind. Ara, My– The receptionist, has a central reference point for checking and requesting incoming sensory messages. The strength of Ahamkara changes by experience and maturity; it provides quality, quantity, stability and consistency to the experience in terms of its definition and form.

The Ahamkara does not function independently but operates through its so-called cabinet ministry Buddhi. Its main function is to calculate, decide, plan, organize, reason, advise. In doing so, he is influenced by Shut up– the warehouse that supplies past conditionings: impulses, drives, habits, etc.

These three functions together:Manas, Ahamkara, i Buddhi interact in a waking state of consciousness; and are responsible for normal conscious activities. The fourth, Shut up, is a very deep store of memories and impressions. Their consciousness is largely superficial during normal activities.

All these four functions operate in the field of consciousness, they can be called “I” or “Atman” or “Purusha”.

In the yoga tradition, these functions are not only applicable to human beings but also to the nature of existence. However, the instruments evolve differently at different levels of existence. Can you think of this application of models in stones, trees, animals, humans and highly evolved beings?
