Many people notice a tendency to let go, which leads to a lack of ambition in practical aspects of life when mindfulness is practiced. Consciousness decreases motivation? And are the criticisms well-founded?

“Focusing our minds on the present moment” is mindfulness, as is widely understood in the West. Plus, we learn how to do it accept things as they are. Rooted in Buddhism more than 2,500 years ago, the benefits of full consciousness there are many: reduction of anxiety, overcoming depression, stress relief, significant relationships …

Mindfulness: Popular, but no less critical

In general, one in seven Americans reports having a mindfulness practice. The concept of mindfulness has become very popular. Vendors even use it to sell products like mayo (MindfulMayo).

But there is no less criticism of this practice.

“Some people believe that mindfulness encourages acceptance. By doing so, it reduces the motivation to pursue goals and improve the situation.” (Psychology Today)

Similarly, there are many critiques of meditation in the workplace or in personal life. Full attention at work or at home may not be as beneficial or appropriate for everyone as people say (B Grace Bullock).

Does mindfulness decrease motivation? Studies show that no

Despite the criticism, many studies have shown otherwise. For example, a study highlighted by Psychology Today showed this: there was a tendency to increase motivation from before to 10 minutes after meditation!

Similarly, another study advanced the same: “The motivation of the goal increased from before to immediately after meditation.”

Surprisingly, even in the case of decreased motivation, there are no reduction in performance. As an example, a study in Havard Business Review supported this strange fact. Those in the conscious group completed their tasks as well as the control group did. This is despite the fact that they feel less inspired.

“We did 14 versions of this experiment, and in each of them the meditators did the job just as well. In one case they did even better” (Havard Business Review).

It all depends on the motivation of what

We know that motivation arises from dissatisfaction with the state of the world today (Knowledge Instead).

So another point to keep in mind is related to “what kind of motivation are we talking about? ”.

You may have noticed throughout your life that motivation and interests change. Maybe one day you’re crazy about golf, and another day about interior design! So you can decrease your motivation for something. But that increases for another.

It also seems that many people, with the practice of meditation, decrease their motivation for a career, for example. Because they realize that they want to dedicate their life to something other than climbing the corporate ladder.

From a normal point of view, their motivation seems to have diminished. But in reality, they have increased another one, which is harder to see!
