Antarayas obstacles: In Yoga tomorrow jo, 30 Patanjali writes: “vyadhi styana samsaya pramada alasya avirati bhrantidarsana alabdhabhumikatva. ”

Overcoming obstacles: Patanjali lists nine obstacles (Antarayas) that arise from the distractions of the mind. These can prevent us from practicing yoga or a liberated life in general. I don’t necessarily see that obstacles irrevocably prevent us from doing something. instead, like something you want to overcome to reach the goal with enormous force. In this sense, obstacles are valuable indicators that show us how to develop our most important potential. It is certainly a mistake to try to avoid them because this only reinforces them. We can accept them with gratitude and transform them into wonders.

These are the nine obstacles, according to Patanjali, that I mentioned:

1. Vyadhi – Disease:

Illness prevents us from living life to the fullest and deepening our practice of yoga. However, illness is a valuable indication to work on important things first before continuing. Every disease can be a real guru for us and help us shed light on hidden blockages. If we try to feel the disease without resistance, it can transmit something enlightening and learn a lot.

Every physical symptom has its cause in the soul and spirit. As it manifests itself in the physical, the problem is already quite advanced on the one hand. Yet, on the other hand, it allows effortless access through the physical to find a way to solve it. But karma also plays a vital role when it comes to illness. If we do not take care of our body and put substances that harm it, it will damage it. Here, too, the constitution and mood play a debilitating or reinforcing role.

I don’t see that the practice disease is generally discouraged because the work itself can be very yogic. In fact, it prevents us from doing some yoga practices that we can only do if we are healthy. But here I would like to emphasize that the journey is the goal, and that it is essential to face it. So a practice of healing yoga can be practiced in any state, and if it is only mental. In Hatha Yoga, one strives to take precautions not to let diseases manifest in the first place. In any case, this gives it a more significant potential to practice and accelerate development.

2. Styana – Mental lethargy, exhaustion:

Styana won’t let us be there. It is a kind of fatigue that makes it difficult to live now. It can stop us from living and practicing yoga, and if we are not careful, it can bore us. Also, at the end of the Mahabharata, fatigue is mentioned as the most important obstacle in life. Buddhism also refers to Styana as one of the five obstacles.

It is worth finding out what causes this fatigue. The possibilities of the causes are numerous and often a combination:

– Too little restful deep sleep

3. Samsaya – Doubts:

Doubt is a major obstacle, as it also reinforces thinking. The main reason for the doubt is the great uncertainty and the fear of doing or believing badly. It is often the fear of not being on the right path, that is, fulfilling one’s own particular Dharma. The cause is then a lack of discernment, Viveka. To participate in the path of Yoga, you need at least a minimum ability to differentiate between good and bad. It is best to make decisions to stay on track and not get distracted too easily. Yoga takes us more and more at a gallop and gives us access to our intuition to know what we want.

Through this experience, we also know how we can overcome all doubts: through feeling, experiencing, connecting with higher levels, and following the feeling of love and peace. Doubts are a cry for help from our soul to reconnect. Since they come purely from our mind, we often do not know what is good for us. The point is to detach ourselves from the mind by meditation, not to let it control us. This is the most important task we have in doubtful times. Getting too involved in our doubts can wear us down, close our hearts, and prevent us from moving forward. 4. Pramada – Descuit:

Meditation is mindfulness. Consciousness is the path to deep spirituality, and lack of attention allows us to fall back or lose ourselves. Most of the time, life immediately gives us a clue to the negligence we have just committed. For example, when you run into something, drop something, or have a negative feeling because of an inattention action that occurs immediately. The cause lies in the not-everything-not-there-not-being in the present and the disinterest he considers otherwise. Negligence can only arise when we are not present in the here and now.

5. Alasya – Indolence, laziness:

When tamas-guna (the energy of idleness) prevails, it is often shown in laziness. Laziness prevents us from doing all that is good for us and leaves us lost in some way. Then we feel heavy, and this heaviness extends to everything so that everything becomes too heavy and too strenuous. It can be dangerous for us to throw up our lives and lead to a kind of unconsciousness.

It requires a specific ability to differentiate whether tamas-guna or sattva-guna prevails in our desire for relaxation. Peace is often essential, but true relaxation makes us feel refreshed and refreshed afterwards. Suppose you let yourself be deterred from practicing yoga by indolence. In this case, this is a sign of unhealthy passivity, and there should be a warning because there are always very relaxed yoga practices. for example, deep relaxation, which satisfies our need for rest.

6. Avirati: attachment to worldly things:

If we allow ourselves to be influenced by worldly things, sensual pleasures, and lose control, it leads to distraction. Then we are no longer ourselves, we only react to external influences and we can be very manipulated. Then we are no longer ourselves, we only react to external influences. In this case, it takes us away from our practice of yoga and recognizes the only true, immortal. But if we use the things of the world and enjoy their impermanence, then we fulfill theirs and our raison d’être.

7. Bhrantidarshana – Deception:

Deception can be caused by incorrect sensory perception, misunderstanding, and imagination. Above all, I see the danger of a subjectivity that looks at everything from its own point of view, imperfect, strongly influenced by our footprints and mind. Therefore, it is essential to always strive for a higher, more objective, superordinate perspective and not be fooled by illusions. Here it is important not to take one’s ego so seriously and to fight for the absolute truth. As Taimni also points out, it is crucial not to consider small lighting experiences as big ones. Many people consider themselves enlightened and have recognized some of the great truth on the same level.

8. Alabdabhumikatva – The inability to gain solid ground underfoot:

Progress must be well-founded; maintain concentration slowly. Practicing yoga can give us a good grip. It is important not to lose sight of reality (the objective situation of the moment). If we fully perceive ourselves at the level where we are, with all the good and the bad, we can develop optimally, from where we are in the moment and without losing the eternal moment. This requires an acceptance of the current reality as it is. Hatha Yoga exercises support “staying on the ground” by dealing with the physical body.

9. Anavasthitatvani – Impermanence:

Loss of concentration leads to instability.

If we are not focused enough on one thing, it can escape us quickly. It also requires the ability to distinguish which elements are significant to me and which are not. I can’t deal with everything that is good for me, but I have to select the best for me. In my experience, a discontinuity obstacle disappears when you find what fills you to the bottom of your soul.

I see the following instability in my yoga practice: I often lose the energy of yoga very quickly. I lack perseverance or motivation because I could spend my whole life doing yoga. But my challenge is to maintain the energy, relaxation, and joy that I have gained in my daily life. Therefore, the problem lies in the inconsistency of my concentration and mindfulness, that is, in the very schematic consciousness.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I would like to say that, in my opinion, all obstacles need only two solutions: awareness and discernment. Therefore, if we limit ourselves to just developing these two traits, it will lead us to solve all our problems. Yoga leads to consciousness, and Patanjali has developed the path of yoga, Ashtanga yoga-marl, to strengthen the capacity for differentiation (Viveka). Understanding leads to discernment, so we need to focus on that awareness. In the following Yoga Sutra I, 32 Patanjali also describes it: “tat pratisedha artham ekatattva abhyasah”, Taimni translates: “To remove these obstacles, a truth or principle should be constantly practiced.
