agni sara dhautiAgni sara dhauti (also known as, uddiyana bandha agni saraor simply agni sara)at first it is a bit head scratching.

Like … “Eh? How do I do that?” and most importantly, “Why would I want to do THAT ?!”

Rupali and I learned this kriya many, many years ago … in Kripalu, so it’s been a long time since we’ve gone beyond the normal reaction and now we only accept it as an important part of practicing yoga.

Sri Krishnamacharya and MahabandhaBecause strange as it may seem, believe me when I tell you that it is one of those yoga practices that is worth learning and practicing on a daily basis. The benefits are deeper than I would first suspect.

And bonus! It can help you develop a really deep central force.

Not only that, but with continued practice you will improve your control over the lower two bands: uddiyana bandha and mule bandha.
These practices are key to gaining mastery of your yoga practice … and a more inward expression of physical positions.

I usually start my asana practice with a few rounds of agni sara. It doesn’t add much time, but it focuses on the present and includes an element of kumbhaka, or breath holding. Breathing will be maintained while pumping the abdominal area.

translated, agni it means fire i sara it means essence. I’ve also seen this translated as fire washing, as you’re stimulating and “washing” your intestines with the action of pumping.

This simple practice can transform the health of your abdominal organs.

These are the benefits of agni sara dhauti:

  • tones the abdominal muscles
  • tones the pelvic floor
  • tones, stimulates and cleanses the digestive system
  • tones, stimulates and cleanses the elimination system
  • stimulates the lower three chakras, which improves the positive characteristics of each
  • massage on the bladder
  • strengthens the muscles that control urine flow
  • shakes the lymph fluid in the abdominal area

As I mentioned, agni sara dhauti is a kriya, a cleansing technique and an important part of yogic practices. It is to cleanse the digestive and elimination systems.

It is advisable to have a well-established hatha and pranayama practice before adding kriyas.

The contraindications are:

  • pregnancy
  • menstruation
  • any type of abdominal injury or illness
  • cardiovascular disease
  • high blood pressure

As you begin to learn this, you will realize that exercises such as crunches and crunches can work against your ability to demonstrate fine control uddiyana bandha agni sara.

Be patient, practice regularly and you will soon feel this deep pumping action resembling a wave that is agni sara.

Access to a knowledgeable teacher is very helpful during the learning process to guide you and answer questions as they arise.

Our video will guide you through the more detailed steps and points of this practice.
