According to the latest CDC statistics, more than a third of the U.S. population sleeps less than seven hours a night. This means that a good number of Americans do not sleep. Why is this so big? When you’re asleep, your brain is recalibrating, which means it works even harder than when you’re awake. To start each day feeling fresh, focused and ready for what awaits us, it is crucial to sleep well.
But even when someone makes a conscious decision to sleep more, it sometimes fails. What you may not realize is that how you prepare for sleep, not only when you prepare for sleep, but also throughout the day, makes a big difference in getting the quality and amount of rest you need.
As for how to lay the groundwork for good sleep throughout the day, all the things you’ve usually heard before (no caffeine in the afternoon, avoid stressful news programs just before bed, turn off the electronics for a couple of hours before bed) to help you get a better night’s rest. What and when you eat, how you stimulate or relax your mind and how much stressful interaction can also have an impact. Ideally, the two hours before reaching the hay are spent doing things like reading, meditating, and enjoying quality time with family. These are all activities that can help you get out of a positive and relaxed mood, which will only improve your sleep pattern.
This introductory meditation, the first of three in our Spring Sleep Better series, will help you prepare your mind for rest through breathing and relaxation techniques. Each month, I will introduce a new meditation that will be practiced just before bedtime as often as possible over the next 30 days, all with the goal of helping you sleep better.
In this 10-minute meditation, and the ones that follow, there will be some usual instructions: get into a relaxed body position, lie in bed with your feet one foot away and your palms up and away from your body. . When you have your legs crossed, for example, do not allow your muscles to rest completely. Once you are in this position, turn off the lights and take a few deep breaths. Now, press play.
